The great jazz musician is basically saying that results, or the byproducts of the musical process, are what count in the end. You can know all of the theory in the world, but if it doesn’t sound good then nobody will listen. This is true in investing, as well. A lot of advisors possess all of the theory and jargon of the market, but how many can deliver market-beating results for decades? The answer is very few. So the next time you’re shopping around for advisors, remember that it’s the sound that counts, not the music.
